A fatal shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington late Wednesday night has been declared an act of terror by the FBI.
The suspect, Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, is in custody and faces charges of first-degree murder and multiple related offenses.
According to officials, the gunman approached a group of four individuals exiting an event at a Jewish museum, opened fire on two of them, and then entered the building, where security officers quickly detained him.
Surveillance footage captured the assailant walking past the couple before suddenly turning around, raising his weapon, and shooting multiple times into their backs. Even after the victims collapsed, he continued to fire, as detailed in an FBI affidavit filed Thursday.
According to U.S. officials, Rodriguez has a documented history of pro-Palestinian activism and reportedly shouted “Free, free Palestine” upon his arrest.
Authorities say Rodriguez approached four individuals departing a diplomatic reception hosted by the American Jewish Committee,was hosting a reception for young diplomats.
