Democracy in Action: Wole Oke Joins National Leaders to Celebrate Nigeria’s Democratic Strides at NASS

In a powerful display of national unity and democratic resolve, Hon. Busayo Oluwole Oke, Member of the House of Representatives representing Ijesa North Federal Constituency, joined distinguished leaders across Nigeria today at the National Assembly to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration in Abuja.



Held in the hallowed chambers of the legislature, the event honored the nation’s enduring journey since its return to civilian rule in 1999. Among those present were royal icon and cultural custodian His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, both of whom lent gravitas to the occasion.


Hon. Wole Oke, who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, reiterated the legislature’s critical role in deepening democratic ideals. In his address, he praised the resilience of Nigerians and their unwavering commitment to representative governance.


 “Democracy is not a destination but a journey, one that demands sacrifice, vigilance, and the collective will of the people,” Oke stated. “We in the National Assembly are duty-bound to uphold transparency, justice, and inclusive development.”



The Ooni of Ife, in a message that bridged tradition and modernity, urged a stronger synergy between traditional rulers and political leaders to foster peace, cultural identity, and national development.


Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized the importance of inclusive governance and the National Assembly’s responsibility in crafting responsive legislation that reflects the will of the people.

The Democracy Day celebration went beyond pageantry; it became a moment of national reflection and renewed commitment to good governance, civic participation, and constitutional order.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex political and economic challenges, Hon. Oke pledged to remain a steadfast advocate for his constituents and a champion of democratic values.

 “Our democracy, though imperfect, is worth preserving, for today’s citizens and tomorrow’s generations,” he said.
