On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. I thought perhaps the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy were enough testimony. My message is particularly for those who believe that the business of Nigeria lies in the hands of a powerful few. Former President Donald Trump has renewed calls for congressional term limits as part of his broader plan to reform Washington. His proposal seeks to impose strict limits on how long members of Congress can serve:
House of Representatives: A maximum of 6 years, or three two-year terms
U.S. Senate: A maximum of 12 years, or two six-year terms
Trump argues that term limits are essential to breaking the grip of career politicians and restoring power to the people. “Decades in Washington breed corruption,” he has said. “We need fresh voices and new energy.”
The plan is part of Trump's longstanding "Drain the Swamp" agenda aimed at reducing entrenched political power and increasing accountability in Congress.
A High Bar for Change
While the idea of term limits enjoys strong support among many voters, enacting them is no simple task. Changing term limits for Congress would require a constitutional amendment, which demands:
Approval by two-thirds of both the House and Senate
Ratification by three-fourths (38) of the 50 state legislatures
Historically, Congress has resisted term limit reforms, as many lawmakers are reluctant to vote themselves out of long-standing positions of power.
A Popular Yet Elusive Reform
Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans support term limits for Congress. Advocates argue it would lead to more responsive and less corrupt government. Critics, however, warn it could reduce institutional knowledge and give more power to unelected staff and lobbyists.
Whether Trump’s renewed push will gain traction remains to be seen, but it has once again placed congressional term limits at the center of national debate.
