Urumqi, China – At the Global South Legislators Summit held in Urumqi, Xinjiang, Hon. Oluwole Oke, Chairman of Nigeria’s House Committee on Foreign Affairs, presented Nigeria’s reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT), while also canvassing for support toward Nigeria’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.
Addressing lawmakers from several member nations, Hon. Oke highlighted key reforms designed to reposition Nigeria’s economy for growth and global competitiveness. He outlined the administration’s ongoing efforts in ease of doing business, citing policies that aim to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, enhance investor confidence, and improve Nigeria’s standing in global business rankings.
On tax reforms, he emphasized the government’s resolve to create a fairer, more transparent taxation system that encourages enterprise while ensuring sustainable revenue generation for national development.
Beyond domestic reforms, Hon. Oke used the summit to build international solidarity, calling on fellow Global South legislators to support Nigeria’s aspiration for a seat at the UN Security Council. He stressed that Nigeria’s track record in peacekeeping, regional stability, and diplomacy makes it a credible candidate to represent the interests of developing nations on the global stage.
The summit in Urumqi provided a platform for lawmakers across the Global South to deepen cooperation, exchange ideas, and strengthen parliamentary diplomacy. For Nigeria, Hon. Oke’s intervention reaffirmed the country’s commitment to reforms at home and a greater voice abroad.
