ASUU: Midnight Silence in the Lecture Halls as Universities Shutdown

 


The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week nationwide strike, plunging Nigerian universities into another round of academic paralysis and uncertainty.


The strike, which took effect from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, follows what the union described as the Federal Government’s persistent failure to honour key agreements, including those on earned academic allowances, revitalization funds for public universities, and withheld salaries arising from the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).


In a statement issued after its emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Jos, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the action became inevitable after several unproductive meetings with government officials.


“We have reached a point where patience has become costly,” Osodeke declared. “Our members can no longer continue working under promises that are never fulfilled. This strike is not meant to punish students, but to remind the government of its obligations to the Nigerian education system.”




Under the new directive, all ASUU chapters across the federation have been ordered to withdraw both academic and administrative services. Lectures, examinations, and research supervision will remain suspended for the duration of the warning strike.


ASUU accused the government of playing politics with education, lamenting that many public universities continue to operate under deplorable conditions.



“The conditions under which our universities function today are disgraceful. Laboratories are empty, research funding is nonexistent, and our salaries are being eroded by inflation,” the union said.




Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has appealed to ASUU to reconsider its decision, assuring that “most of the issues raised are receiving accelerated attention.”


Across campuses nationwide, students have expressed deep frustration over the development, with many lamenting that recurrent strikes have stretched their academic calendar far beyond schedule.


This latest action marks the first major confrontation between ASUU and the Tinubu administration since it assumed office in 2023, reigniting debates about Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable education funding.





As midnight descended, lecture halls across the country fell silent, another reminder that in the struggle for Nigeria’s educational soul, the classrooms often pay the highest price.
