Madagascar’s political crisis deepened this week as President Andry Rajoelina reportedly went into hiding following weeks of violent anti-government protests that have left parts of the Indian Ocean nation on edge.
Rajoelina confirmed that he was sheltering in an undisclosed location, citing threats to his life after demonstrators intensified calls for his resignation over alleged corruption, economic hardship, and deteriorating living conditions.
“I am safe, but there are credible threats on my life,” Rajoelina said in a brief national address. “I will continue to serve the people of Madagascar.”
Despite widespread pressure, the president vowed to remain in power, a decision that observers warn could further inflame public anger.
Over the past several weeks, tens of thousands of protesters have filled the streets of Antananarivo and other major cities, accusing the government of mismanagement and economic neglect. The demonstrations have increasingly turned violent, prompting clashes between security forces and civilians.
