Formation of U.S. Parties: Lessons for Gen Z to Shift From Tragicomedy to Transformational Change Makers

American political history did not begin with noise, drama, or personality battles. It began with ideas, ideas so strong that they outlived their founders and shaped a nation for centuries. The Democratic Party traces its origins to Thomas Jefferson and the political struggles of the 1790s. The Republican Party emerged in 1854 from a coalition of anti-slavery activists and reformists determined to redefine the soul of the country.

These parties were not formed for election seasons or quick victories. They were built on ideologies, crafted intentionally to address the political, social, and economic crises of their time. And because they were rooted in ideas, not personalities, America produced generations of leaders who built institutions, expanded rights, and established legacies so strong that citizens still say “God bless America” without irony.

But what lessons does this hold for today’s Nigerian youth, especially Gen Z?

America’s early leaders were not perfect, but they understood one principle clearly:

If you build a nation on ideas, generations will inherit stability.

If you build it on individuals, generations will inherit chaos.

Nigeria’s System Punishes Hope and Rewards Manipulation

In Nigeria, when a young person tries to struggle with a holy mind, with integrity, vision, and sincerity, the system often pushes them away. Evil actors reap the benefits, and society claps, calls it “politics,” and moves on.

Young dreamers walk away because the system was never designed to accommodate truth-tellers. From student unions to party structures, speaking truth can earn you:

Suspension

Isolation

Character assassination

Frustration out of the system

Corruption is not only at the top; it starts from the smallest forums, the campus associations, youth coalitions, ward meetings, and local structures. If those spaces reject truth, how will the higher ones accept it?

A Broken Brotherhood: When Comrades Become Opponents

Nigeria’s political culture has created a vacuum where no brother trusts brother, and comrades split over crumbs and ego.

Celebrities now replace real activists. Movements become one-man shows. Politics becomes a performance. And leadership takes on the script of Spider-Man, swinging from one moment of chaos to another, without structural depth.

This is how tragedy becomes comedy,

and how a nation becomes a stage

instead of a democracy.

Who Will Build the Party That Outlives Them?

Every generation produces at least one set of young elites who carry unity like a covenant and vision like an inheritance.

But where are Nigeria’s own Jeffersons and Lincolns?

Who will build a party:

rooted in ideology,

consistent like the Democrats,

resilient through centuries,

and able to carry Nigerians from poverty to dignity?

Who will offer templates, not slogans?

Structures, not hashtags?

Strategies, not drama?

This is not about age. It is about purpose.
