President Adama Barrow has formally bid farewell to the outgoing ECOMIG Force Commander, Colonel Ndiagne Diouf, while welcoming the newly appointed commander, Colonel Aliou Tine, during a courtesy visit at the State House.
The President expressed deep appreciation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of Senegal for their steadfast support and service to The Gambia. He assured the new Force Commander of the Gambian government’s full cooperation and support, while stressing the need for close collaboration with local authorities to sustain the country’s hard-earned reputation for peace and security.
In his response, Commander Aliou Tine pledged to work closely with Gambian security institutions and other relevant authorities, assuring President Barrow of his commitment to proactive measures aimed at preventing threats to national stability.
Also speaking, the ECOWAS Head of Bureau in The Gambia, H.E. Miata Lily French, reaffirmed ECOWAS’ continued commitment to peace and stability in the country. She underscored the importance of strategic and coordinated security efforts to ensure sustained stability across the sub-region.
President Barrow noted that the ECOWAS region continues to face multifaceted security and democratic challenges, emphasizing that the protection of peace, stability, and democratic values remains a collective responsibility. He called on all stakeholders to work together in safeguarding democracy, reiterating his administration’s commitment to transparent, free, and fair elections.
The High Commissioner of Senegal to The Gambia, H.E. Mariama Sy, reiterated Senegal’s unwavering support, highlighting her country’s dedication to strengthening bilateral cooperation and contributing to regional peace and stability.
Outgoing ECOMIG Commander, Colonel Ndiagne Diouf, expressed gratitude to the Gambian authorities for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure. He commended the collaborative spirit and conducive working environment, which he said enabled the successful execution of ECOMIG’s mandate.
President Barrow concluded by extending his appreciation to ECOWAS leaders, including Senegalese President, H.E. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and commended Senegal for its continued support to The Gambia and the wider sub-region.
