Ukrainian authorities say they have identified the bodies of two Nigerian nationals allegedly killed while fighting on the side of Russia in the ongoing war.
According to a statement released by Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, military operatives discovered the remains in the Luhansk Region, an active frontline area in eastern Ukraine. The agency named the deceased as Hamzat Kazeen Kolawole, 42, and Mbah Stephen Udoka, 38.
Ukrainian officials claimed both men had signed contracts with the armed forces of Russia in the latter part of 2025 and were deployed to combat units shortly afterward. The statement further alleged that the two did not undergo adequate military training before being sent to the battlefield.
While Ukrainian intelligence maintains that the men were participating in hostilities on Russia’s side, there has been no immediate official confirmation from the government of Nigeria or Russian authorities regarding the identities or circumstances of their deaths.
The development adds to broader international reports suggesting that foreign nationals from different regions have been recruited into the conflict, often under unclear or disputed arrangements. The war, now in its fourth year, continues to draw global attention as both sides exchange claims over foreign involvement and battlefield losses.
