Osun LG Funds Crisis: APP Writes Bishop Kukah, Urges Urgent Intervention

The Osun State chapter of the Action People's Party (APP) has written an open letter to Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, urging him to intervene in the ongoing controversy surrounding the withholding of local government funds in Osun State.

In the letter dated March 2, 2026, and signed by the Osun State APP Chairman, Odesola T. Oluseye, the party appealed to Bishop Kukah to use his moral authority to engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the matter.



The party described the dispute over statutory allocations to local governments in Osun as an “unending political impasse” between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).




According to the APP, court rulings — including judgments from the Federal High Court in Osogbo and the Court of Appeal — had affirmed the position of the PDP-led administration regarding control of local government structures. However, the party alleged that APC chairmen continued to lay claim to the councils despite what it described as the expiration of their tenure in October 2025.

The APP further claimed that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, directed the United Bank for Africa (UBA) to withhold the disputed local government funds, a development the party said had caused hardship at the grassroots level.

In its appeal, the APP urged Bishop Kukah to call on President Tinubu to direct the release of the funds in the interest of development and stability in Osun State.

The letter cited both moral and cultural arguments, including a quote attributed to Alexander Pope that “all it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to keep silent,” as well as a Yoruba proverb emphasizing the responsibility of elders to prevent disorder in society.





As of press time, there had been no official response from the APC, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, or the Presidency regarding the allegations raised in the letter.
