The Executive Governor of Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday joined family members, friends, and dignitaries to celebrate the 66th birthday of renowned Nigerian journalist, publisher, businessman, and motivational speaker, Dele Momodu.
The event, organised by The Dele Momodu Foundation under the theme, “Ignorance and the Danger of Xenophobia,” became a platform for conversations around the growing menace of xenophobic attacks in Africa, particularly those targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
Speakers at the occasion condemned the rising hostility against Nigerians abroad, warning that such actions threaten regional peace, continental unity, and the ideals of Pan-African cooperation.
In a moment marked by admiration and camaraderie, Governor Adeleke paid glowing tribute to the celebrant, affectionately describing him as his “twin brother.”
The governor praised Chief Momodu as a towering figure in African journalism and publishing, citing his contributions through Ovation International, where he serves as CEO and Publisher. He also commended the media icon’s advocacy for national cohesion and African unity.
Speaking on the theme of the event, Governor Adeleke called for urgent collective action against xenophobia across the continent.
“Xenophobia is a cancer that eats away at the fabric of our shared humanity,” the governor stated.
“The attacks on our citizens in South Africa and elsewhere demand serious and immediate attention. As leaders, we must work together across borders to ensure these hostilities come to an end. We cannot continue to preach African unity while our brothers and sisters are targeted simply because they are Nigerians,” he added.
Governor Adeleke further pledged his administration’s support for initiatives aimed at ending xenophobic violence against Nigerians in the diaspora, stressing the need for stronger diplomatic engagement and collaborative African solutions.
The keynote lecture at the event was delivered by Eghosa Emmanuel Osaghae, who provided an extensive analysis of the socio-political roots of xenophobia and its implications for Pan-African integration.
Also present at the gathering was Jewel Howard-Taylor, who chaired the occasion, further highlighting the continental significance of the event.
Veteran Juju musician Shina Peters delivered a moving performance in honour of the celebrant, celebrating his enduring contributions to journalism and humanity.
In his remarks, Chief Momodu expressed appreciation to Governor Adeleke, guests, and The Dele Momodu Foundation for turning his birthday into a meaningful platform for advocacy and reflection.
