Chief CBN Onwuasoanya Ezendigbo has called for greater accountability in Nigeria's political system, saying the country should strengthen its democratic institutions and place the welfare of its citizens at the centre of governance.
Speaking during an interview on Oriontimes, Ezendigbo compared governance practices in the United Kingdom with those in Nigeria, arguing that public office holders in established democracies are more readily held accountable for their actions.
"The United Kingdom colonised us, but when politicians make mistakes there, they resign. In Nigeria and many African countries, there is little respect for the people," he said.
He lamented the continued migration of talented young Nigerians, describing the country's brain drain as a consequence of limited opportunities and governance challenges.
"Many young people with valuable skills are leaving the country because they no longer believe their future is secure here," he stated.
Ezendigbo also questioned why government officials seek medical treatment abroad while Nigeria continues to produce qualified healthcare professionals.
"Our ministers travel overseas for medical treatment, yet our universities continue to produce highly qualified doctors and nurses. We should invest in our healthcare system instead of abandoning it," he added.
The public affairs commentator further urged governments at all levels to make greater use of Nigerian professionals, particularly engineers, in delivering infrastructure projects.
"We have more than 50 qualified universities producing intellectuals, engineers, doctors and other professionals. We must trust our own people to build our roads and develop our nation."
According to him, Nigeria's greatest challenge is not a shortage of human resources but the effective management of public funds.
"We need to invest our money in Nigeria instead of stealing and embezzling public resources. Until we address corruption and place national interest above personal gain, meaningful development will remain difficult."
He concluded by calling for stronger institutions that promote accountability, transparency and responsible leadership while ensuring elected officials remain answerable to the people they serve.
