The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has advocated for the establishment of Shariah courts in southwestern Nigeria, asserting that such courts are constitutionally permitted.
He made this known today, Friday 27th December, 2024 at the ongoing Taawunu National Conference in Iwo Osun State.
He emphasizes that Shariah courts would adjudicate personal matters for Muslims, including marriage, inheritance, and divorce, aligning with the rights provided under the Nigerian Constitution.
The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria allows for the establishment of Shariah courts at the state level, primarily concerning civil proceedings involving questions of Islamic personal law. Sections 275 to 279 of the Constitution provide for the creation of Shariah Courts of Appeal in states that require them.
