Says Peace, Healing and Rule of Law Must Prevail Across the State
The Osun State Government has warned individuals and groups against any attempt to disrupt public peace, stressing that the state has entered a critical period of post-election reconciliation, healing and peace-building.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, expressed sympathy for victims of pre-election tensions and violence, urging all residents to embrace peace and support efforts aimed at rebuilding unity across the state.
The government noted that while the recently concluded election has come and gone, reports of post-election disturbances in some parts of Osun remain a source of concern. It therefore appealed to citizens, political stakeholders and community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence and respect for the rule of law.
According to the statement, the government is particularly worried by intelligence reports suggesting that some actors may be planning to trigger fresh crises in local government councils and motor parks across the state.
“This plan, if true, should stop immediately in the interest of public peace. Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics,” the statement said.
The government emphasized that the electoral process has produced winners and losers, adding that attention should now shift towards reconciliation and governance rather than political confrontation.
It further noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Ademola Adeleke have demonstrated commitment to a peaceful path forward, warning that any attempt to reignite violence would amount to a challenge to constitutional order and the spirit of democratic engagement.
The state government also called on security agencies to ensure strict adherence to the rule of law by facilitating the release of political detainees where necessary and addressing concerns over perceived partisan policing, particularly in matters relating to local government administration and motor park management.
Reiterating its commitment to peace and stability, the government urged all political actors to exercise restraint in both words and actions, warning against a return to the era of political violence and bloodshed.
“Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence,” the statement concluded.
The government maintained that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, urging all stakeholders to place the collective interest of Osun State above partisan considerations.
