Vance Boelter, accused of fatally shooting a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband and injuring another lawmaker and his wife, made his first appearance in federal court on Monday. Authorities say Boelter had orchestrated a broader plan to terrorize Democratic politicians in a politically motivated rampage.
Captured late Sunday after what officials described as the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history, Boelter has already been charged by state prosecutors with two counts of second-degree murder. Federal prosecutors intend to pursue additional charges, including federal murder counts that could carry the death penalty.
Quote: “This was a political assassination, which is not a word we use very often in the United States,” said Joseph Thompson, acting U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota.
