President Trump left the G7 summit in Canada a day earlier than scheduled, citing escalating tensions in the Middle East as the reason for his abrupt departure.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump was returning to Washington “because of what is going on in the Middle East.” Initially, Trump declined to endorse a joint G7 communiqué urging de-escalation between Iran and Israel, but later signed on after the language was revised to his satisfaction.
The crisis has intensified as Israel presses the U.S. to intervene militarily, specifically by deploying massive 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs capable of targeting Iran’s heavily fortified Fordo nuclear facility. While Trump has long expressed opposition to U.S. involvement in foreign wars, he has also consistently warned against a nuclear-armed Iran.
