Europe’s Football Giants Learn Their Fate as UEFA Draws Unveiled in Monaco

The stage is set for another thrilling season of continental football as UEFA on Thursday and Friday conducted the draws for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League in Monaco, unveiling blockbuster fixtures and historic storylines.


Champions League: Familiar Rivalries, Fresh Fire


Holders Manchester City will once again lock horns with Real Madrid in what has become the defining rivalry of modern European football. The two powerhouses were drawn alongside Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Villarreal, Galatasaray, Bodo/Glimt, and Monaco under UEFA’s revamped league-phase format.


Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain will face Barcelona, a pairing loaded with history and emotions for PSG boss Luis Enrique, who once led Barça to Champions League glory. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich also headline challenging paths in what promises to be a fiercely competitive edition.


Europa League: Nostalgia and High Drama


The Europa League draw delivered both sentiment and spectacle. Nottingham Forest were paired with Malmö, rekindling memories of the 1979 European Cup final where Forest claimed glory. They will also navigate fixtures against Porto, Ferencvaros, Braga, Sturm Graz, Utrecht, Real Betis, and Midtjylland.


Aston Villa’s path features Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Feyenoord, Young Boys, Salzburg, Basel, Bologna, Fenerbahçe, and Go Ahead Eagles, while Celtic and Rangers, both Champions League playoff casualties now face tough tests against the likes of Roma, Genk, Ludogorets, Utrecht, and Braga.


UEFA added a touch of theatre to the proceedings, with Belgian great Eden Hazard pressing a “magic button” to unveil fixtures, a move that amused fans and sparked playful accusations of “digital rigging.”


Conference League: A Night for the Irish


The Conference League draw marked a milestone for Irish football. Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne both qualified for the league phase, with Shelbourne making their first-ever appearance on the continental stage. Their campaigns will pit them against seasoned European sides including AZ Alkmaar, Dynamo Kyiv, Strasbourg, and AEK Larnaca.


The Road Ahead


This season ushers in UEFA’s new 36-team league-phase system, replacing the traditional group stage. Each club will play eight fixtures against eight different opponents, with the top eight advancing directly to the knockout rounds. Teams finishing between ninth and 24th will battle in play-offs for the remaining last-16 spots.

Adekunle Isaac Omoyele , who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital following an attempted assassination on his life on Monday, has strongly refuted the claims made by the Osun State Police Spokeperson regarding the incident. Driver Chop Off Vehicle Inspection Officer’s Ear Over Car Particular

  A yet-to-identified Sienna car driver has reportedly bitten the ear of a Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) identified as Papu Prosper. The incident occurred during a heated argument between the officer and the driver along Eagle Roundabout by Federal Government College, Warri, Delta State.
