Playing with Fire: Why Nigeria Must Tread Carefully on the Israeli-Palestinian Crisis - Abioye Tosin Lawrence

 


....No Israeli leader, past or present, has ever meddled in Nigeria’s internal crises




In a world already engulfed by conflict, the need for measured voices has never been more pressing. Yet, recent comments by former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) on the Gaza-Israel crisis have ignited concerns about how individual rhetoric can dangerously stray into the terrain of national consequence.


FFK’s latest remarks, accusing Israel of genocide, apartheid, and even suggesting it is “losing the right to exist as a nation” ,may reflect personal conviction, but they carry undertones capable of reverberating beyond social media. Though not a government official, FFK is still a prominent political voice. His words, therefore, are not taken lightly on the international stage.



Nigeria’s historic posture has been one of strategic neutrality, engaging with both Israeli and Palestinian interests while maintaining a delicate balance shaped by our own multi-religious and multi-ethnic composition. Disrupting that equilibrium through emotionally charged language can endanger diplomatic ties, stir sectarian tensions at home, and undermine our credibility as a potential peace broker.



More so, as Nigeria grapples with its own painful crises, from massacres in Plateau and Benue to the silent killings in Kaduna and Zamfara, there is urgent need for focus on internal healing and security. It is both curious and telling that no Israeli leader, past or present, has publicly delved into Nigeria’s internal conflicts, criticized our armed forces, or issued statements that risk fueling divisions within our federation.


Diplomacy, especially in a fragile world order, demands discipline. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a playground for political grandstanding. It is a deeply rooted, complex, and tragic saga that demands empathy, restraint, and a commitment to peace, not rhetorical escalation from afar.



Nigeria must not allow its global image or domestic harmony to be shaken by the unfiltered emotions of individuals, no matter how prominent. Let us speak with wisdom, act with responsibility, and always place national interest above sensational soundbites.

Assassination Attempt: Police can’t deny what’s on their desk, says Amotekun boss

  The Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps , High Chief Dr Hon.
