The ancient city of Osogbo is set to witness a royal spectacle as the 15th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Majesty, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II, the 16th Ataoja of Osogboland, commences in grand style.
Installed in 2010, Oba Olanipekun has become a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and visionary leadership. His reign, now in its fifteenth year, will be celebrated with a nine-day program of activities blending tradition, faith, academia, and modern expression.
The festivities begin on Friday, September 12, 2025, with a Jumat Service at the Central Mosque, Oja-Oba, where faithful will gather to thank Almighty Allah for a peaceful and prosperous reign. This will be followed on Saturday, September 13, by a traditional thanksgiving at the sacred Idi-Ileke Temple, affirming the ancestral foundation of the throne.
On Sunday, September 14, Christian worshippers will converge at All Saints Cathedral, Balogun Agoro, for an interdenominational thanksgiving service, a reflection of Osogbo’s religious harmony under the monarch.
The celebration will also feature an intellectual dimension on Monday, September 15, with a public lecture at Osun State University. Renowned legal luminary, Barrister Rasheed Kunle Adegoke (SAN), will deliver a lecture on “Constitutional Roles for Nigerian Traditional Rulers in a Democratic Setting.”
The youth take center stage on Tuesday, September 16, with a schools’ debate, Yoruba quiz competition, and the final of the Ataoja Anniversary Football Tournament. On Wednesday, September 17, the spotlight shifts to culture with Adire Day, a vibrant showcase of Osogbo’s globally celebrated indigenous textile art.
A rest day follows on Thursday, September 18, giving room for reflection and private engagements. On Friday, September 19, history will be documented with the public presentation of “CROWNED BY FATE”, a book chronicling the life and reign of Oba Olanipekun, at the De-Distinguished Events Centre.
The festivities will climax on Saturday, September 20, with a grand cultural extravaganza at Osogbo Technical College. The finale promises a feast of music, dance, drumming, and traditional performances, encapsulating the spirit and heritage of Osogboland.
For indigenes, residents, and well-wishers, this anniversary is more than a royal milestone, it is a celebration of Osogbo’s identity, resilience, and progress under the steady hand of Oba Olanipekun.
The Ataoja’s reign, marked by peace, cultural revival, and developmental strides, continues to reaffirm the place of traditional institutions as custodians of heritage and partners in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
As the city opens its doors to dignitaries and guests from all walks of life, the 15th Coronation Anniversary of Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun stands as a reminder that tradition, when nurtured with wisdom, remains a powerful force for unity and progress.
