Heavy Rains Devastate Nepal: At Least 22 Dead, Dozens Missing

No fewer than 22 people have been confirmed dead following two days of relentless rainfall

across Nepal, triggering massive landslides and flash floods that have cut off major highways, washed away bridges, and left entire villages stranded.

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the worst-affected regions include Bagmati, Gandaki, and Koshi provinces, where swollen rivers swept away homes and farmlands. Rescue officials say the death toll could rise as several people remain missing or trapped under debris.

“The situation is grim. We are deploying helicopters and rescue teams to isolated areas where communication lines are completely down,” said Home Minister Ramesh Bista during a press briefing in Kathmandu.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as muddy torrents engulfed settlements overnight. “The river came roaring at midnight, it took everything,” said Sita Rana, a resident of Sindhupalchok district, who lost her home in the floods.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate immediately as weather forecasts predict more heavy rains in the coming days. The government has also appealed for international assistance to support ongoing relief operations.

Nepal, a mountainous nation prone to natural disasters, faces annual monsoon-related challenges. This year’s rainfall, however, is being described by meteorologists as one of the most intense in over a decade, worsening due to deforestation and poor drainage infrastructure.

Humanitarian agencies, including the Red Cross and UNDP, are coordinating efforts to deliver food, medical supplies, and temporary shelters to displaced families.
