President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly ruled out the deployment of foreign mercenaries in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, insisting that African nations must champion their own security solutions.

ile addressing regional leaders, Tinubu emphasised that relying on external combat forces undermines national sovereignty and weakens the continent’s collective capacity to tackle insurgency, banditry, and extremism.
He urged African governments to deepen collaboration, enhance intelligence sharing, and strengthen local armed forces rather than outsourcing critical security responsibilities. According to him, sustainable peace can only be achieved when nations build resilient, home-grown defence systems.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to leading regional security cooperation, stressing that Africa must “take ownership” of its security challenges to safeguard stability and development.
