In a historic political upset, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, 34, has been elected as the next Mayor of New York City, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a fiercely contested race. The victory not only marks a generational shift in the city’s politics but also crowns Mamdani as the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s storied history.
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and son of renowned scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, rose to prominence as a New York State Assembly member representing Queens.
