Wives of Detained Osun Amotekun Personnel Demand Release, Decry Prolonged Detention

 

Wives of Osun State Amotekun Corps personnel currently in police custody have staged a protest in Osogbo, Osun State, to demand the immediate release of their husbands, who were arrested by the Nigeria Police in connection with the killing of Akinlalu.

The peaceful protest, which took place on Monday, saw the women carrying placards with inscriptions appealing to the Federal Government, the Nigeria Police Force, former state governors, and other eminent political leaders to intervene in the matter.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mrs Ajiboye Olusola lamented that their husbands have remained in detention in Abuja for over four months without any form of communication or updates on their case.

She described the situation as unbearable, calling on the relevant authorities to show compassion and ensure their release.

“Our husbands have been detained for more than four months, and since then we have not heard from them,” she said. “We have been patient, but the suffering is becoming too much. They did not commit any crime. We are pleading with the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police to release our husbands.”

Another protester, Mrs Idayat Oluwatoyin Oladokun, also appealed to authorities, stressing that the detained men are the primary breadwinners of their families.

“Our husbands are our breadwinners, and since their incarceration our families have been going through severe hardship,” she said. “We can no longer endure this suffering. My husband left home one day in October, saying he was going to work, and he never returned. I am begging those in authority to please intervene and release our husbands.”

Similarly, Mrs Demola Aminat appealed for leniency on behalf of the detained personnel, stating that the families’ hopes are solely dependent on the compassion of the authorities.

The wives recalled that in the previous week, they had taken their protest to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, but were unable to meet the monarch due to his absence.

In a related development, the wives of the detained Amotekun personnel in Abuja also visited the Ooni of Ife’s palace to formally submit a demand letter. The letter was received on behalf of the monarch by the Obalufe of Ile-Ife, who assured the women that the Ooni would intervene and work towards a lasting resolution of the matter.

The protesters reiterated their call for justice, compassion, and the immediate release of their husbands, stressing that continued detention without communication has placed unbearable emotional and economic strain on their families.
