Nigeria’s Lull on Oba Femi: A Missed Moment of Sporting Soft Power

 


In what has left many fans with a sense of excitement and reflection, the global rise of Nigerian-born professional wrestler Oba Femi has once again raised a familiar question: how does Nigeria recognize its global achievers when they shine on the world stage?




Competing under the banner of WWE, Oba Femi has steadily built international attention through his performances and growing reputation in professional wrestling entertainment. His emergence has been praised by global wrestling audiences and figures within the industry, further highlighting Nigeria’s presence in global sports entertainment.



Yet at home, there has been little to no visible national acknowledgment or structured recognition of his achievements.



This silence becomes more noticeable when compared with how other sporting successes are treated. For example, following major victories by national teams such as the Super Falcons and D’Tigress, the Nigerian government has historically responded with structured rewards, including financial bonuses, housing allocations, and national honours.



These gestures reflect a clear pattern: traditional sports achievements tend to receive swift institutional recognition.



However, the growing global influence of athletes like Oba Femi introduces a different kind of success, one rooted not only in competition, but also in international visibility, branding, and cultural influence.



The contrast raises an important question: should Nigeria’s definition of sporting achievement evolve to reflect newer global platforms such as professional wrestling, where visibility and influence extend far beyond traditional sporting metrics?

This is not a call for comparison, but for reflection.



Because in an increasingly globalized sports landscape, recognition is no longer just about medals or trophies, it is also about presence, influence, and national representation on global stages.




The concern, therefore, is not whether Oba Femi has succeeded internationally. He clearly has.



The question is whether Nigeria is paying attention when its citizens are shaping global narratives in new arenas.

Assassination Attempt: Police can’t deny what’s on their desk, says Amotekun boss
