The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians additional time to register ahead of future elections.
The extension, announced on Friday by the Commission's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, shifts the deadline from July 10, 2026 to Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to the Commission, the decision followed a comprehensive review of the exercise and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
INEC said the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters before future electoral activities.
In a major technological advancement, the Commission also announced the introduction of a self-service online voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
The digital registration option will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission's dedicated CVR portal. The platform is designed to allow eligible Nigerians to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices, eliminating the need for an initial physical visit to an INEC office.
INEC stated that the system is equipped with robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The Commission urged all eligible citizens who have yet to register to take advantage of both the extended registration period and the newly introduced digital registration platform.
Reaffirming its commitment to credible, inclusive, and accessible elections, INEC said the latest initiatives demonstrate its resolve to leverage technology in improving citizens' participation and overall experience in Nigeria's electoral process.
