The Osun Amotekun Corps has strongly rejected allegations made against it by some political actors, describing claims that it is a criminal organisation as false, malicious, and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Corps' Public Relations Officer, Yusuf Idowu Abass, the security outfit said the accusations, reportedly raised during a meeting with the Nigeria Police Force's Inspector General of Police, were aimed at undermining one of Osun State's most effective community-based security institutions.
The Corps said that although it would ordinarily ignore politically driven accusations, it decided to respond in order to reassure residents and preserve public confidence in its operations.
According to the statement, the Osun Amotekun Corps has consistently carried out its responsibilities in line with the laws establishing it, maintaining professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rule of law.
The Corps highlighted its collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies in intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and emergency response. It said these partnerships have contributed to successes in tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal mining, cultism, and other criminal activities across Osun State.
Addressing allegations concerning the operational attire of its personnel, the Corps insisted that all operations are conducted strictly within approved operational guidelines and applicable laws.
It stressed that the leadership has never authorised any unlawful practice or impersonation of other security agencies, dismissing such claims as unfounded.
The Corps also welcomed reports that the Inspector General of Police had assured stakeholders that the allegations would receive due attention, expressing confidence that any objective and evidence-based review would expose the accusations as lacking credible proof.
While urging political stakeholders not to politicise security matters, the Corps warned that attempts to drag security institutions into partisan disputes could weaken public trust and embolden criminal elements.
Reaffirming its apolitical stance, the Osun Amotekun Corps called on residents to disregard what it described as baseless allegations and continue supporting the outfit with timely and credible information to aid crime prevention.
The Corps maintained that it remains committed to effective community policing, collaboration with other security agencies, accountability, respect for human rights, and the protection of lives and property across Osun State.
It concluded that no amount of politically motivated misinformation or coordinated attempts to discredit the Corps would deter it from carrying out its constitutional mandate.
