high cost of data subscriptions in Nigeria has significantly impacted businesses across various sectors, both large and small. As businesses increasingly rely on digital tools, platforms, and the internet to operate efficiently, the cost of data has become a major factor in their profitability and growth.

Local governments have a vital role to play in safeguarding the businesses of the people in the country. With their influence and ability, local governments should collaborate with both the public and private sectors to help reduce the cost of data and improve internet access. One effective solution is for local governments to set up free or low-cost Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas such as markets, parks, schools, hospitals, and government offices, providing residents with free access to the internet. This initiative would help improve communication, research, and education without relying on expensive mobile data subscriptions.

Local governments should also focus on safeguarding businesses by partnering with NGOs to roll out community Wi-Fi projects in cities and urban areas, particularly in high-traffic locations. This would enable public internet access for the entire community at minimal costs.

Additionally, offering small grants and subsidies to local startups and businesses, especially those in the tech and digital sectors, could help reduce operational costs, including internet expenses.

Telecom companies in Nigeria have periodically increased data subscription prices, often in response to rising operational costs, inflation, and regulatory changes. This makes it even more crucial for local governments to take action.

Promoting the use of Wi-Fi in homes, workplaces, and public spaces for data-heavy activities (such as streaming or downloading large files) can help alleviate the pressure on mobile data subscriptions.
