At BRICS Forum in Brazil, Wole Oke Champions Nigeria’s Role in Shaping a New Era of Inclusive Global Governance

As a representative of Nigeria, one of the newly welcomed BRICS partner nations, Wole Oke’s presence marked a significant step forward in parliamentary diplomacy for Africa’s most populous nation, positioning Nigeria to contribute meaningfully to conversations shaping the future of global governance, trade, and sustainable development.

The forum gathered lawmakers from major economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as new entrants like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia was welcomed as a full BRICS member, while Nigeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan were recognized as strategic partners.

In a communique issued at the end of the forum, participating legislators reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and a reformed global order that reflects the voices of developing nations. The forum condemned rising unilateralism, called for equitable health access, inclusive trade practices, climate action, and a renewed commitment to inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Hon. Oke, known for his advocacy for legislative accountability and international cooperation, emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to partner with BRICS on areas such as health equity, climate resilience, trade fairness, and AI governance.

“Nigeria is honored to be part of this historic gathering. Our shared aspirations for equity, peace, and sustainable development align perfectly with the goals of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum. Strengthening South-South cooperation and ensuring inclusive representation in global institutions is not just timely, it’s necessary,” Oke stated during a side dialogue with fellow parliamentarians.
