Ghana Launches First Locally-Led Dive Lab to Empower Young Ocean Stewards and Boost Marine Conservation Capacity

 Pioneered by NEWF Fellow & PADI Instructor George Amado, the initiative trains Ghanaian youth, scientists, and coastal communities in scuba diving and ocean protection.

Accra, Ghana — A Landmark Moment for Ocean Conservation in West Africa


Ghana has achieved a historic milestone with the launch of its first locally-led dive lab, designed to build marine research capacity and empower young conservation leaders across the country. The program is spearheaded by George Amado, a PADI-certified dive instructor, Nature Environment Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF) Fellow, and committed ocean advocate.


Held from September 15–21, 2025, the maiden dive lab brought together early-career scientists, conservation practitioners, and youth leaders for intensive scuba diving instruction, marine science learning, and community engagement. The initiative aims to nurture a new generation of African ocean stewards equipped to study, protect, and advocate for Ghana’s aquatic environments.


“I grew up along Ghana’s coast where the ocean was both economic lifeline and childhood wonder,” Amado says. “Over the years, I witnessed human impact eroding our waters, from pollution to overfishing. That inspired my commitment to marine conservation, and today, I want to open doors for other young Africans to dive, learn, and protect our ocean ecosystems.”






Filling a Critical Knowledge & Skills Gap


Despite Ghana’s long Atlantic coastline and rich aquatic biodiversity, very few local researchers have formal diving training, limiting opportunities to conduct underwater science and conservation work.




 “There’s a huge gap in diving capacity among Ghanaian conservationists,” Amado explains. “This dive lab was created to bridge that gap, equipping local scientists, youth leaders, and conservationists with the technical skills and research tools to safeguard our waters.”




Participants ranged from first-time swimmers to marine scholars seeing underwater ecosystems firsthand for the first time, transforming theoretical knowledge into lived experience.






Combating Pollution, Illegal Mining & Ocean Degradation


The dive program arrives at a critical time. Ghana’s aquatic ecosystems face mounting pressure from illegal mining (galamsey), plastic pollution, and destructive fishing practices.


 “Pollution from rivers flows directly into the ocean,” Amado notes. “By empowering local voices with scientific skills, we are building a network capable of research, advocacy, and holding leadership accountable for environmental protection.”

The lab was made possible through support from NEWF, the Regional Maritime University, and other mission-aligned partners.


 “We overcame challenges through transparency, collaboration, and unwavering belief in our purpose,” Amado recalls. “This is a testament to what can happen when communities champion conservation.”

One of the most emotional moments for Amado was watching university academics dive for the first time:

 “Seeing professors encounter marine life in its natural habitat — it was powerful. It reminded me why access matters.”




The dive lab sets the foundation for continuous marine training, youth empowerment, and conservation storytelling across Ghana and beyond.
