On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. A fresh diplomatic storm is brewing at the United Nations as the United States pushes for an international stabilisation force to oversee Gaza in the aftermath of the war. But instead of building consensus, the proposal has opened deep fractures among world powers, exposing a geopolitical divide that may delay any meaningful transition in the territory.
The U.S. plan seeks to establish a UN-mandated force to maintain order, coordinate humanitarian operations, and pave the way for a transitional administrative board. However, Russia and China have strongly criticised the proposal, describing it as politically one-sided and lacking clear guarantees for Palestinian sovereignty. Several Arab states have also rejected the idea, insisting on a framework that gives Palestinians, not foreign powers, control over their future.
At the heart of the dispute is the composition of the transitional governing board, which Washington wants to include a limited role for the Palestinian Authority. Critics argue that the proposal risks sidelining Palestinian representation and allowing external actors to dominate Gaza’s post-war reconstruction and security architecture.
Diplomats familiar with the discussions say negotiations are tense, with no consensus in sight. One UN representative described the situation as “a negotiation room split down the middle.”
Beyond the diplomacy, the stalled proposal leaves millions in Gaza uncertain about what comes next. Humanitarian agencies warn that delays in establishing a transitional arrangement could worsen an already fragile situation—where infrastructure is destroyed, healthcare crippled, and displacement widespread.
For the broader Middle East, the implications are equally weighty. A security vacuum in Gaza could lead to further instability across the region, while prolonged disputes among global powers risk complicating peace efforts.
As the UN Security Council prepares to reconvene in the coming days, global attention is fixed on whether Washington can broker enough support, or whether Gaza’s political future will remain suspended in diplomatic deadlock.
