In a new twist to Nigeria's religious and political landscape, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of betraying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu despite what it describes as “unprecedented favour” extended to Christians under the current administration.
The accusation follows the recent re-designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by United States authorities over alleged violations of religious freedom.
MURIC alleges that petitions submitted by some Christian leaders to U.S. institutions contributed to the fresh CPC listing, a move the group argues unfairly portrays the Tinubu government as enabling persecution against Christians.
According to MURIC, the Christian body failed to counter what it called “a misleading narrative” abroad, instead allowing foreign actors to assume that Christians are targeted in Nigeria. The group cited what it calls preferential appointments and political concessions made to Christians under President Tinubu, insisting that CAN's silence and alleged petitions amount to “a stab in the back.”
The accusation has stirred reactions across political and religious circles, raising fresh debates about the influence of religious lobbying on Nigeria’s foreign relations and domestic politics.
CAN has not yet issued an official response to the allegations as of press time.
Analysts say the development underscores the fragility of interfaith trust in Nigeria, especially at a time when the nation faces security challenges and international scrutiny over rights and governance.
For now, the public awaits CAN’s perspective, while observers warn that the politicisation of religion could deepen tensions in an already polarised environment.
