Ezendigbo Slams Costly Elections, Calls for Food Security, Security Reform, and Economic Nationalism

 

In a forthright interview with Oriontimes, former presidential aspirant and renowned Nigerian politician, Chief CBN Onwuasoanya Ezendigbo, has delivered a sweeping critique of Nigeria’s governance challenges, urging a decisive shift in national priorities.



Ezendigbo, an Igbo chieftain and founder of Better Nigeria for Better People (BN4BP), is widely respected for his uncompromising stance on public accountability and nation-building. During the interview, he reflected on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political realities, stressing that the country’s recurring problems are not a result of lack of ideas, but of misplaced priorities and weak political will.

One of his strongest criticisms was directed at the huge budgetary allocations for conducting elections, which he described as unsustainable in a nation grappling with poverty, insecurity, and decaying infrastructure. According to him, the resources spent on elections could be better invested in sectors that directly impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Ezendigbo also made a compelling case for agricultural development and food security, warning that no nation can thrive while depending heavily on food imports. He emphasized the need to empower local farmers, modernize agricultural practices, and treat food production as a matter of national security.

On security, the former presidential hopeful expressed deep concern over the worsening state of safety across the country. He linked insecurity to systemic corruption, insisting that without sincere efforts to reduce corruption and reform security architecture, economic progress will remain elusive.

In addition, Ezendigbo strongly advocated for made-in-Nigeria products and the revival of local industries, arguing that economic independence begins with supporting indigenous production. He noted that patronizing local goods would create jobs, strengthen the naira, and reduce overdependence on foreign economies.

Beyond politics, Chief Ezendigbo remains actively involved in socio-cultural and community initiatives, particularly within the Igbo nation, where he is regarded as a vocal leader and bridge-builder.

His interview with Oriontimes reinforces his long-held position that Nigeria’s rebirth lies in visionary leadership, prudent resource management, and a collective commitment to national development over personal or political interests.
