Effurun Shooting: IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officer

 

In what appears to be a firm stance against police misconduct, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State.



The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the tragic death of a young man identified as Mene Ogidi, sparking outrage and renewed concerns over the conduct of security operatives in Nigeria.


Preliminary findings revealed that the officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, breached established rules governing the use of firearms, particularly provisions under Force Order 237, guidelines designed to regulate the use of lethal force by police personnel.


Following an internal review, the Nigeria Police Force described the officer’s actions as unlawful, unprofessional, and a gross violation of the duty to protect life. The Force Disciplinary Committee subsequently recommended his dismissal, a decision now approved by the IGP, alongside immediate steps toward criminal prosecution.


In addition, officers connected to the incident have reportedly been withdrawn from the Delta State Police Command and redeployed to Abuja to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation.


The police hierarchy reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings, emphasizing that no officer is above the law and that accountability remains central to restoring public trust.


While the swift action by the police leadership may signal a willingness to confront misconduct within its ranks, many Nigerians will be watching closely, not just for promises, but for justice that is seen to be done.

The killing once again underscores a persistent national question: can institutional reforms within the police system truly curb abuse of power, or will such incidents continue to define public perception of law enforcement?

For now, the fate of ASP Usman will serve as a test case, not only for the Nigeria Police Force but for the broader justice system.
