More than 38,000 women and girls have been killed in Gaza between October 2023 and December 2025, according to a new analysis by UN Women, highlighting the devastating toll of the conflict on vulnerable populations.
The report, released six months after the October 2025 ceasefire, revealed that over 22,000 women and 16,000 girls lost their lives during the period, averaging at least 47 deaths per day.
Despite the ceasefire, Gaza continues to witness persistent threats to the lives of women and girls, with reports indicating that killings have not completely stopped in recent months.
Titled The Cost of the War in Gaza on Women and Girls, the report also noted that nearly 11,000 women and girls sustained injuries, many resulting in lifelong disabilities. However, the actual figures could be higher, as numerous bodies remain buried under rubble, while the collapse of health data systems has limited accurate documentation.
Speaking on the findings, Moez Doraid described the situation as devastating, stressing that the war has significantly altered family structures, leaving tens of thousands of households now headed by women.
He noted that many of these women face worsening economic hardship while shouldering the burden of caregiving and survival under extreme conditions.
Doraid called for full adherence to the ceasefire, respect for international law, and stronger accountability measures, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize the protection of women and girls.
He also urged the international community to ensure unimpeded humanitarian assistance and to place women at the center of recovery, peacebuilding, and reconstruction efforts.
UN Women said it continues to operate in Gaza, working with women-led and rights-based organizations to provide funding, coordination, and technical support, while advocating for inclusive participation in rebuilding efforts.
