On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. I thought perhaps the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy were enough testimony. Yet, in the final hour, a thought stirred within me, compelling me to write a message to all of us who have come together to form this sovereign nation called Nigeria. My message is particularly for those who believe that the business of Nigeria lies in the hands of a powerful few. Perhaps they are influenced by what the German sociologist Robert Michels described as the "Iron Law of Oligarchy" ,the tendency for power to concentrate in the hands of a small elite. The publication of an open letter attacking Hon. Wole Oke, the Director-General of the AMBO Campaign Organisation, raises serious concerns about loyalty, discipline, and commitment within the progressive family.
While every political party accommodates diverse opinions and constructive criticism, it is unusual for a genuine and committed party member to embark on a public campaign aimed at discrediting respected leaders at a critical stage of political mobilization. Such actions only serve to create distractions, deepen divisions, and provide ammunition for political opponents.
Since Hon. Wole Oke assumed the position of Director-General of the AMBO Campaign Organisation, opposition elements appear increasingly unsettled. This is understandable given the political significance of attracting experienced and influential figures into the All Progressives Congress (APC). The entry of prominent politicians into the party naturally strengthens its electoral prospects and broadens its support base.
The lengthy attack against Hon. Wole Oke is filled with personal opinions, assumptions, and allegations that remain unsubstantiated. Rather than focusing on party growth, grassroots mobilization, and preparations for future electoral contests, the author appears more interested in sowing discord among party faithful.
The progressive movement has always been built on inclusiveness, reconciliation, and the capacity to accommodate individuals who subscribe to its ideals. Many respected leaders across Nigeria's political history have changed political platforms at different times, and such transitions have often strengthened rather than weakened their new political homes.
It is therefore difficult to understand why the emergence of Hon. Wole Oke as Director-General should trigger such hostility from someone who claims to be working in the party's interest. The timing and tone of the attack inevitably raise questions about whose interests are truly being served.
Party members must remain vigilant against attempts to create unnecessary crises within the APC. Internal disagreements should be addressed through established party mechanisms, not through public campaigns designed to embarrass leaders and weaken collective efforts.
At a time when the party should be focused on unity, victory, and delivering good governance to the people, all stakeholders should resist divisive narratives and remain committed to the larger progressive cause.
The APC is bigger than any individual, and its strength has always rested on unity, discipline, and respect for constituted leadership.
