A former presidential aspirant in Nigeria's last general election, Chief CBN Onwuasoanya Ezendigbo, has identified stable electricity supply and effective waste recycling as critical drivers of Nigeria's economic development and industrial transformation.
Speaking on national development, Ezendigbo stressed that uninterrupted electricity would unlock the country's economic potential by creating jobs, boosting businesses, and improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.
According to him, reliable power remains the foundation of industrial growth, noting that meaningful employment opportunities and sustainable economic expansion cannot be achieved without adequate electricity.
He also raised concerns over environmental challenges, attributing issues such as flooding and pollution in Lagos to poor waste management and the failure to recycle refuse. He argued that embracing modern recycling practices would not only protect the environment but also create additional employment opportunities and support a cleaner economy.
Drawing comparisons with Europe, Ezendigbo observed that while many developed countries are contending with environmental concerns linked to climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer, rapid technological advancement has also contributed to job displacement in some sectors. He added that ongoing geopolitical conflicts, including the Russia–Ukraine war and tensions involving Iran and the United States, continue to exert pressure on the global economy.
The former presidential aspirant further questioned Nigeria's continued dependence on countless private electricity generators, describing the practice as inefficient and environmentally harmful.
He advocated for greater investment in large-scale power generation and distribution infrastructure, arguing that it would reduce noise pollution, minimize vibrations that could affect buildings, lower production costs for businesses, and provide more reliable electricity to homes and industries.
Ezendigbo maintained that with consistent electricity supply, improved waste recycling, and strategic investments in infrastructure, Nigeria would be better positioned to accelerate economic growth, attract investments, and improve the living standards of its citizens.
