Former presidential aide and public commentator Reno Omokri has sparked conversations on religious tolerance after sharing reflections from the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, where he said he spent time meditating.
In a post shared on social media, Omokri noted that many Christians may not be aware that several Popes have visited mosques for prayer or meditation as part of interfaith engagement.
According to him, Pope John Paul II made history on May 6, 2001, when he removed his shoes before entering the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria, where he prayed. The mosque is revered for housing the traditional burial site of John the Baptist, a prophet honoured in both Christianity and Islam.
Omokri further stated that Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis also observed moments of meditation inside Istanbul's historic Blue Mosque. He added that Pope Francis prayed alongside the then Grand Mufti of Istanbul, Rahmi Yaran, during his visit to Turkey, describing the event as a remarkable demonstration of mutual respect between faiths.
While encouraging readers to verify the historical accounts, Omokri concluded with a message emphasizing God's sovereignty and the universality of prayer.
"The Earth belongs to God, and there is absolutely no place in this realm where you will pray and God will not hear you," he wrote.
The remarks have generated discussions on interfaith dialogue, religious coexistence, and the shared spiritual values that unite people across different beliefs.
