Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered a nationwide ban on fixed-odds betting, just days before the country heads to the polls for its general election.
Under the new measure, bettors will no longer be allowed to make fresh deposits into betting accounts, while existing balances must be withdrawn before the government moves to block betting websites and applications.
The ban also affects betting advertisements, sponsorships and promotional activities, with existing arrangements allowed to continue only until the specified transition deadline.
The Brazilian government said the measure is aimed at tackling rising household debt, gambling-related harm and illegal activities linked to the betting industry.
The decision comes at a politically sensitive time, with Brazil’s election approaching and Lula seeking another term in office. The timing has already drawn criticism from political opponents, who have questioned the government’s decision to introduce the restrictions so close to the election.
The measure remains subject to legislative approval, meaning Brazil’s Congress will determine whether the ban becomes permanent.
