The Advocate for Citizens’ Justice and Democratic Accountability (ACJDA) has rejected allegations that the results of the recently concluded Osun State Governorship Election were hacked to favour Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing the claim as unsubstantiated and potentially capable of undermining confidence in the electoral process.
In a statement signed by Comrade Mayowa Ogundijo, the organisation criticised what it described as claims attributed to the Liberation Movement of Nigeria (LMN) and Vanguard for Human Rights (VHR), challenging those behind the allegation to provide independently verifiable evidence to support their claims.
ACJDA said allegations that the election results were manipulated electronically to produce Adeleke as the winner were serious claims that should be supported by credible evidence rather than assertions.
The organisation argued that the outcome of the election reflected the votes recorded during the electoral process and maintained that attempts to question the result should be pursued through recognised constitutional and legal channels.
ACJDA further alleged that there were incidents of voter intimidation, alleged vote-buying, arrests of political actors, shootings and other irregularities in parts of the state during the election period.
It specifically referenced allegations from areas including Odo-Otin, Boripe, Irewole, Ilesa East, parts of the Ife axis and the Osogbo area, including Olorunda.
However, the organisation's claims regarding these incidents remain allegations, and the statement did not provide detailed independent documentation for each of the incidents referenced.
According to ACJDA, despite the alleged challenges surrounding the election, voters participated in the process and the results were subsequently declared by the electoral authorities.
The group also rejected suggestions that the election was manipulated at the highest level, arguing that the electoral process should be assessed based on available evidence and reports from recognised observers and institutions.
ACJDA further referred to calls by some political interests for the election to be declared inconclusive, maintaining that such calls did not ultimately alter the declared outcome.
The organisation said reports by local and international observers should form part of any serious assessment of the election, rather than what it described as anonymous or politically motivated allegations.
It warned that attempts to delegitimise an election without sufficient evidence could heighten political tension and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
ACJDA subsequently warned the groups it accused of promoting the hacking allegation to desist from what it described as false, defamatory and inflammatory claims, threatening to pursue appropriate legal action if such statements continued.
The organisation also urged citizens to avoid actions capable of provoking violence and encouraged anyone with grievances concerning the election to pursue them through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the courts and other constitutionally recognised mechanisms.
“The mandate of the people cannot be hacked by propaganda, and Osun must not be dragged into political chaos because some interests refuse to accept reality,” Ogundijo said.
