  On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. I thought perhaps the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy were enough testimony. Yet, in the final hour, a thought stirred within me, compelling me to write a message to all of us who have come together to form this sovereign nation called Nigeria. My message is particularly for those who believe that the business of Nigeria lies in the hands of a powerful few. Perhaps they are influenced by what the German sociologist Robert Michels described as the "Iron Law of Oligarchy" ,the tendency for power to concentrate in the hands of a small elite. Nigerian Governor To Subsidise Petrol At N600 For Farmers

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has disclosed that the state government will Subsidise the cost of petrol to farmers in communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency. The announcement was made on Friday evening in Bama town when he flagged off the distribution of farm inputs to more than 5,000 farmers hitherto displaced by Boko Haram insurgents. According to the Zulum, a litre of petrol sold between N1,000 and N1,200 in Maiduguri will be subsidised to the farmers for N600. This is aimed at cushion the financial implications faced by farmers in communities that have suffered economic and infrastructural destruction due to years of conflict. Zulum remarked that a similar initiative implemented in Damasak, Mobar Local Government Area, last year had significantly increased food production and improved livelihoods.
