Drama in Senate as Lawmakers Shun Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Motion on Abused Nigerian Women in Libya

The Nigerian Senate has finally adopted a motion moved by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), calling for urgent action on the plight of Nigerian women allegedly being abused in Libyan prisons.



Earlier footage circulating on social media and reported by Channels TV, TheCable, and Sahara Reporters showed a brief moment of hesitation among lawmakers after Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a seconder to the motion. However, the motion was later seconded and received majority approval after deliberations resumed.


In her presentation, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the red chamber to mandate the Nigerian Immigration Service to liaise with Libyan authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Nigerian women facing alleged sexual exploitation and other human rights abuses in Libyan detention facilities.


The senator alleged that some of the affected women were sexually abused and forced to bear children while in custody, describing the situation as a humanitarian crisis requiring immediate intervention.


After brief deliberation, the Senate unanimously resolved to direct relevant agencies, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, to investigate and coordinate repatriation efforts in collaboration with international bodies.


The development has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians commending the senator’s courage and urging the National Assembly to ensure follow-through and accountability in the implementation of the resolution.
