No U.S., Russian, or Chinese Citizen Would Face Such Abuse — Their Nations Protect Them with Strong Diplomatic Power

In a passionate appeal before the Red Chamber, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan called on the Nigerian Senate to mandate the Nigerian Immigration Service to liaise with Libyan authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Nigerian women currently facing alleged sexual exploitation and human rights abuses in Libyan detention centers.

Her motion, though touching, reawakens a painful truth many Nigerians already know: Libya has become a graveyard of dignity for thousands of our citizens, from stranded migrants to trafficked women and even professional athletes who once went there in search of greener pastures.

It will be recalled that years ago, members of the Super Eagles and other Nigerian athletes on training or engagement tours in North Africa encountered harassment, intimidation, and in some cases, outright violence. These incidents were largely brushed aside under diplomatic silence. Libya’s unstable leadership and militia-controlled territories have since worsened the plight of African migrants, particularly Nigerians, who are routinely detained, sold, or assaulted with little hope of justice.

The sad reality is that no American, Chinese, or Russian citizen would ever be treated this way. Their countries wield the kind of diplomatic muscle that commands respect and fear in foreign lands. The mere detention of a single U.S. citizen abroad can trigger emergency diplomatic engagement, sanctions, or even military presence.

But for Nigerians, the story is different. Our citizens are abused, detained, or trafficked, and the reaction from Abuja is often muted. No international outrage, no swift rescue, no sanctions. Just another “condemnation statement” that fades by the next news cycle.

This is why Senator Natasha’s call should not end as another motion of sympathy. It should translate into concrete action, beginning with a government-issued travel ban and advisory against migration to Libya, except for verified diplomatic or official missions.

The Federal Government must also take steps to strengthen Nigeria’s consular presence in North Africa, prosecute traffickers exploiting these routes, and launch a public awareness campaign across border states to deter illegal migration through Libya.

If the Nigerian state cannot yet wield the global power of the U.S. or Russia, it must at least act with the moral authority of a government that values its people.

Because in the end, a nation that cannot protect its citizens abroad has already failed them at home.
