‘Losers Will Congratulate Winners’ — Prof. Amupitan Declares as New INEC Chairman

The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has pledged to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process, promising an era where “losers will congratulate winners.”



Speaking shortly after his confirmation by the Senate on Thursday, Prof. Amupitan assured Nigerians that his leadership would uphold the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and credibility in the conduct of elections.


 “In my time, elections will be so credible that losers will have no choice but to congratulate winners,” he said.



The new INEC boss emphasized his commitment to strengthening institutional independence, improving voter education, and leveraging technology to eliminate irregularities that have long undermined electoral integrity in the country.


He also reaffirmed his belief that credible elections are essential to national unity and political stability, stressing that the commission under his watch would not tolerate compromise or manipulation at any level.


“Our democracy will be better served when both winners and losers believe in the process,” he added.




Prof. Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure earlier this year.


His appointment has been met with cautious optimism, with political observers urging him to match his words with concrete reforms that can restore trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
