Bandits Demand Massive ₦3.8bn Ransom for Abducted Kwara Church Worshippers

 

The wave of insecurity rocking several parts of the country has taken a frightening turn as bandits who invaded Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Igan, Eruku, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, have reportedly demanded a staggering ₦100 million per victim in exchange for the release of the abducted worshippers.

Multiple local sources and community leaders confirmed that the abductors, who grouped the victims according to family ties, began contacting relatives on Thursday with their demands. With 38 worshippers believed to have been taken, the total ransom demanded is estimated at ₦3.8 billion.

Chief Olusegun Olukotun, the Olori Eta of Eruku, said families have been receiving direct calls from the kidnappers, each insisting on the same amount. He described the situation as “devastating and unbearable for a rural community already struggling economically.”

The attack on the church, which occurred during a midweek service, left several community members injured, while initial reports indicate that at least three worshippers were killed during the assault.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Police Command has dismissed a viral video claiming arrests have been made in connection with the attack, labeling the clip as false and misleading. Police authorities insist that rescue operations are ongoing and urge residents to avoid spreading unverified information.

The shocking ransom demand has further reignited conversations about rising insecurity across Nigeria and the growing boldness of armed groups who continue to exploit vulnerable communities.

Efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of the abducted church members, though families fear the worst as negotiations remain tense and uncertain.
