Nigerian Governor Increases Corps Members’ Allowance to ₦50,000



Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved a significant upward review of monthly allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, increasing the payment from ₦4,000 to ₦50,000.


The announcement, which marks one of the most generous state-backed welfare adjustments for corps members in recent years, reflects the Otti administration’s stated commitment to youth empowerment, human-capacity development, and support for national service participants working across government institutions in Abia.


The governor, while approving the new allowance structure, noted that NYSC members play an essential role in public service delivery, particularly in education, healthcare, and rural development across the state. The adjustment, he added, is a gesture aimed at recognizing their contributions and cushioning economic pressures faced amid rising living costs nationwide.


The new allowance regime represents an over 1,100 per cent increase from the previous ₦4,000 monthly stipend paid by the state government.


Reactions have trailed the move on social media, with many Nigerians applauding the decision and calling on other state governments to emulate Abia in improving welfare support for corps members deployed to their states.


Observers say the development may spark a nationwide conversation on NYSC welfare reforms, particularly as inflation and cost-of-living challenges continue to strain the finances of young graduates serving across the country.


For corps members posted to Abia State, the adjustment brings significant relief, and renewed expectations that service year experiences can be both dignifying and economically manageable.
