In a significant national security development, the Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to undertake a comprehensive review of the country’s firearm laws, a move aimed at allowing responsible and law-abiding citizens to own guns for self-defence.
The resolution followed a motion raised on the floor of the Senate addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, including kidnappings, banditry, attacks on schools, and targeted killings. Lawmakers argued that with security agencies overstretched, citizens should have the legal option to protect themselves and their families.
Nigeria’s current Firearms Act, originally enacted in 1959, already provides limited provisions for civilian gun ownership — but only through a stringent licensing process, and with many types of weapons strictly prohibited. The Senate’s new call seeks a modern review to align the law with present-day realities.
According to the motion, the review would establish clearer frameworks for who qualifies as a “responsible citizen,” the type of firearms that may be legally owned, and stronger checks to prevent misuse. Lawmakers also emphasized that any reform must include robust background checks and strict enforcement to avoid abuse.
Security analysts warn that while the proposal has the potential to empower vulnerable communities, it must be carefully implemented to prevent uncontrolled weapon circulation. Others argue that with rising insecurity, a revised law could serve as a necessary deterrent against violent criminals.
The Federal Government is expected to study the Senate’s recommendation and determine next steps. For now, the debate has opened a new chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to balance citizen safety with responsible gun control.
