The Nigerian Senate has reaffirmed its position on the planned ban of sachet alcohol and small-volume PET bottle alcoholic beverages, directing the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) not to extend the December 31, 2025 deadline.
The upper chamber issued the directive on Thursday, emphasizing that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to curb alcohol abuse and protect young Nigerians who are most vulnerable to cheap and easily accessible alcoholic products.
Lawmakers maintained that the enforcement timeline remains firm and urged manufacturers to comply with the transition period already provided. The Senate also called on regulatory authorities to intensify sensitization and ensure strict implementation when the ban takes effect.
The move has continued to attract mixed reactions from stakeholders in the beverage industry, public health advocates, and consumers across the country.
