Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday staged a protest at the National Assembly in Abuja over unpaid pensions and alleged neglect by government authorities. The demonstration, which drew elderly ex-officers from across the country, turned emotional when one of the retirees collapsed during the protest.
The pensioners, many in their late 60s and 70s, demanded immediate payment of their outstanding entitlements and removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme, insisting they were promised the Defined Benefit Scheme before retirement.
Chanting solidarity songs, the officers accused successive governments of abandoning them after years of service to the nation.
According to reports by Sahara Reporters, The Cable, and Punch Newspaper, the collapsed officer was quickly assisted by colleagues and security personnel as protesters continued to call for urgent government intervention.
The former officers lamented that some of their colleagues have died in poverty while awaiting their pension benefits, describing the situation as humiliating and unacceptable for people who dedicated their lives to national security.
They appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly leadership to step in swiftly and ensure the release of their funds and full compliance with pension obligations.
