Tanzania has slipped into the global spotlight for all the wrong reasons, not for strengthening democracy, not for elevating competent women into leadership, and certainly not for aligning with the principles championed by UN Women. Instead, the East African nation now stands as a fresh example of how power can betray its own symbolism. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, once celebrated as a beacon for women’s political ascent, has taken a turn that even her strongest admirers struggle to defend.
Appointing her daughter, son-in-law, and other politically connected individuals into strategic government positions is not just a political miscalculation, it is a philosophical contradiction. It shatters the very ideals that lifted her into global recognition and drags Tanzania backwards at a moment when the continent desperately needs examples of merit-based, gender-balanced leadership.
Africa Wants a UN Permanent Seat, But Cannot Even Balance Its Own Democracy
When Africa begins its periodic agitation for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, I had warned in my recent article that such aspirations will be determined not by the loudness of our continental rhetoric but by how well we balance our own democracies. Global respect is not demanded; it is earned through internal discipline.
A region where leaders preach democracy but practise family-first governance cannot convincingly ask the world to entrust it with global responsibility. You cannot demand a seat at the big table while breaking the legs of your own democratic furniture.
When Democracy Becomes Disguise, Oligarchy Creeps In
When those in power disguise under democracy yet behave like proprietors of a private kingdom, the system does not grow, it rots. And a rotting democracy does not end with a whimper; it slides into the familiar abyss of military intervention.
This cycle — democracy→impunity→citizen frustration→military intrusion — has been Africa’s most reliable tragedy and the biggest stumbling block in the political evolution of the Black race.
The Electorate Has Become Spectators, Not Stakeholders
Today, across many African nations, the electorate has been reduced to spectators in a theatre of governance gone rogue. Elected officials act with the swagger of performers who know that the audience no longer has a voice, or perhaps no longer dares to use it.
Power now flows to those who enter office by hooks, crooks, or hereditary convenience. Once enthroned, they rule as though integrity is optional and accountability is negotiable.
And then we wonder why military men feel tempted to "correct" politicians, as if their boots carry moral disinfectant.
Tanzania: A New Chapter in an Old Book
Tanzania, under Samia Suluhu Hassan, has simply opened a new chapter in Africa’s oldest political textbook:
“How to Convert Public Office Into Family Business — 101.”
The tragedy is not just that family members were appointed; it is that the appointments were defended with straight faces, as though citizens have suddenly become allergic to reason.
This is not democracy.
This is dynasty-building wrapped in the language of governance.
A Blow to UN Women and the Global Gender Movement
Samia’s action is not merely a domestic scandal; it is an ideological betrayal.
UN Women advocates for women to rise through:
competence
merit
transparent processes
equal opportunity
dismantling patronage systems
What happened in Tanzania is the opposite:
patronage dressed as empowerment, and nepotism disguised as gender progress.
It hands critics of women leadership the ammunition they have long searched for and weakens decades of advocacy.
Conclusion: A Feminist Symbol Turned Political Irony
Samia Suluhu Hassan once represented the future, the possibility of women leading African nations responsibly, accountably, and with moral clarity.
But in her latest political choreography, she risks becoming a symbol of the very problem she was expected to solve.
Tanzania’s nepotism crisis is not just a domestic embarrassment; it is a continental cautionary tale, a reminder that the struggle for gender-balance in politics cannot survive on symbolism.
It must stand on the pillars of merit, integrity, and democratic honesty.
