LAGOS — A Nigerian lawyer, Dr. Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, has challenged MTN Nigeria over the reported depletion of 708.55GB from an 800GB annual data plan she purchased for ₦125,000.
Adams, who reportedly subscribed to the annual plan on May 15, 2026, said her account showed only 91.45GB remaining as of August 27, meaning 708.55GB had been consumed in approximately 104 days.
The development has prompted the lawyer to demand a detailed explanation from the telecommunications company on how the data was allegedly consumed.
Among other things, Adams is seeking a comprehensive breakdown of her data usage, including the dates and times of deductions, the volume of data consumed during individual sessions, and the applications or services responsible for the consumption.
The lawyer's complaint raises questions about transparency in data accounting and the ability of subscribers to independently verify how their purchased data is being utilised.
Adams has reportedly indicated that she could pursue legal action if the matter is not satisfactorily addressed.
However, there is presently no established finding that MTN improperly deducted the data. The reported 708.55GB figure represents the consumption reflected on the subscriber's account, while the circumstances surrounding the unusually high usage remain subject to clarification.
The case could therefore become a significant test of transparency and consumer confidence in Nigeria's telecommunications sector if the dispute proceeds further.
For now, the central question remains: How was more than 700GB of an 800GB annual data allocation consumed in just over three months?
MTN's response to the lawyer's demand will likely provide further clarity on the matter.
